Becoming Confident with Writing:

One of the easiest ways you can improve your own writing skills is through practice. This may sound like an elementary point, but in fact many people who are uncomfortable with their writing abilities avoid even the most basic writing tasks – and this can make the problem worse. It is important to remember that no one but yourself need read your practice texts, and there is therefore no need to feel embarrassed or that you have written something incorrectly – no one is going to correct you or poke fun at your writing if you are the only person that sees it.

There are a few ways you can ease your way into the writing process that will help you to organize your ideas and to clarify the topic you’ve chosen. Brainstorming is a wonderful way of getting everything in your head on to paper. Get a sheet of paper – the bigger the better – and jot down some of the ideas or main points you want to write about. If it helps, try drawing arrows from one linked idea to another, or number them so that you know which points you want to mention first, middle and last. With a plan or map in front of you, writing tasks become much easier.

If you want to practice writing in a particular style, you can try picking themes you’ve seen on the news or in the papers and writing about them. A letter to the editor about a current event, a website post or blog post about a sports team, or even a mock-sales pitch about a product you’ve seen advertised on TV – all are great ways to get into the swing of writing. Once you’ve finished the text, try comparing yours to others you have seen, and identify the similarities and differences. Through comparison and practice, you’ll find that you soon become comfortable with the style of writing you have chosen to emulate.
